Cruising through Alaska

We are not your typical cruise family - we don't love buffets, crowds, or boats. With many recommendations, we decided a cruise was a great first way to see and experience Alaska. We did pre/post in Seattle. Our Tracy Arm Fjord itinerary was Seattle --> Ketchikan --> fjords/glaciers --> Juneau --> Skagway --> Inside Passage --> Victoria, BC --> Seattle.

Our stops were cute fishing villages, but seemed built for tourists. We enjoyed the breathtaking scenery, got in a couple great hikes, and did the excursion of a lifetime. We took a helicopter (despite our fears, this was awesome) to the top of Denver Glacier, where there is a working dog camp with Iditarod dogs and trainers. After landing on the dramatically beautiful glacier, we went over the rules, I hooked up my go pro, and we were off on the best sled ride ever. It was incredible watching how the dogs worked and led each other. After the ride, we got to play with some of the newest members of the crew (puppies!).

We also did an excursion on zodiac boats in hopes of getting up close and personal with wildlife. We saw bald eagles and porpoises, no bears. Maybe next time, when I go deeper into the Yukon and explore Denali. The food was all very good and fresh, and I enjoyed drinking some Alaskan beers. The cruise itself was a great way to experience Alaska for a first-timer.

I also unexpectedly fell in love with Victoria, British Columbia. Highly recommend! Next time, I'd recommend a CruiseTour which combines the cruise with a land exploration. Or cruise one way and fly back from Alaska.
